Community Champion

The MBA Opens Doors Foundation is pleased to present the 2018 MBA Opens Doors Community Champion Award to Susan and Van Stewart of SWBC Mortgage, long-time supporters of the Foundation. Our awardees have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Foundation both personally and professionally.

The Community Champion award, created in 2013, recognizes an individual, group or company that has dedicated significant time and effort to advance the Foundation’s mission. Susan Stewart serves as CEO and Van Stewart serves as President of SWBC Mortgage, a full service mortgage banking firm headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. Under their leadership SWBC Mortgage has grown from three employees to 615 individuals operating in 39 states with annual sales of $3 billion and a servicing portfolio exceeding $10 billion.

Susan, an MBA Opens Doors Foundation Board member since 2016, was nominated to serve as Vice Chairman for the 2019 Mortgage Bankers Association membership year in June. She currently serves as a member of MBA’s Board of Directors and is Vice Chair of the MBA’s 

 Susan Stewart

Residential Board of Governors (RESBOG). She is past president of the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association and the San Antonio Mortgage Bankers. Susan was appointed to the Texas Mortgage Industry Advisory Committee by the Commissioner of the Texas Savings and Mortgage Banking Division. In 2009, she received the Texas Mortgage Bankers Distinguished Service Award.

A native of San Antonio, Van has been active in civic organizations for many years, including Kiwanis and Rotary. He serves as Chairman of the Board of the Friends of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital. He is past president of the San Antonio Mortgage Bankers Association and the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association.

 As an MBA Opens Doors Foundation Board Director, Susan has willingly stepped up to champion the Foundation at MBA and state MBA events. Together, Susan and Van’s commitment to Opens Doors goes beyond SWBC’s generous support, with personal support of $245,000 since 2016.  SWBC has maintained distinguished Guardian level corporate sponsorship with nearly $500,000 in contributions since 2013.

Founder's Award

The MBA Opens Doors Foundation is pleased to present the inaugural MBA Opens Doors Founder’s Award to David and Mary Stevens, who along with former MBA Board member Daniel Arrigoni, established the Foundation in 2011. 

The award recognizes significant contributions to the Foundation’s mission of helping vulnerable families with critically ill or injured children remain in their homes while a child is in treatment. The award recognizes one or more individuals whose demonstrated action has occurred over a sustained period of time. Honorees exemplify the core values, spirit and essence on which Opens Doors was founded.  

In 2011, the Mortgage Bankers Association, led by then President and CEO David Stevens, committed $50,000 to cover the expenses of the Foundation. Under his leadership, MBA’s commitment has grown exponentially and continues to cover all administrative costs of the Foundation.

Since its inception, Mary Stevens has spearheaded the Foundation’s grants process and served on the grant review committee, reading hundreds of applications from families across the country each month. Her leadership helped to formalize the Foundation’s relationships with nine participating hospitals. For their vision in creating the Foundation and for their sustained efforts and support, we honor David and Mary Stevens with the first-ever MBA Opens Doors Founder’s Award.

 The Spirit Award

The MBA Opens Doors Foundation is pleased to present the inaugural Spirit Award to Sharyn Torrisi-Cartwright, VP, Human Resources, Pulte Mortgage; Cheryl Paul, SVP, Director of Mortgage, Settlers Bank; and Susan Brown, SVP, Construction and Renovation Production Manager, Umpqua Bank.

The Spirit Award recognizes a group of individuals, from one or more organizations, whose enthusiasm and support for Opens Doors brought new people and organizations to the Foundation’s roster of supporters and whose efforts amplified the impact Opens Doors has on vulnerable families in America. 

Since 2013, Sharyn Torrisi-Cartwright has organized company-wide events in support of Opens Doors, engaging teams in games, picnics, auctions, and farmer’s markets to raise awareness and funds for the Foundation. Over the past five years, her efforts have raised in excess of $60,000 from Pulte employees. In 2018, Cheryl Paul and Susan Brown launched a $40,000 fundraising campaign to rally all CMBs to band together and adopt Opens Doors as their charity of choice in 2018. Their efforts have brought new donors to the Foundation community and raised visibility for our work. 

For their spirit and effort, we honor Sharyn Torrisi-Cartwright, Cheryl Paul and Susan Brown.
